HMRC renegotiates cloud contract with AWS

New three-year deal replaces and extends previous £40m single year deal, and includes a commitment from HMRC to spend a minimum of approximately £29m a year with AWS.

The contract has been arranged through the G-Cloud 12 procurement framework and permits HMRC to take advantage of the discounted pricing offered on AWS services via the One Government Value Arrangement (OGVA) organised by Crown Commercial Services last November. This allows all UK public sector organisations to be treated as a single client by AWS, accessing favourable terms.

This comes on the heels of a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report in January that said that HMRC was investing too much money to maintain legacy systems at the expense of future-proofing its IT environment.

In line with the Government’s guidance, HMRC is embarked on a cloud-first strategy that will see it move most of its platforms and services to multiple cloud hosting providers in the coming years.

HMRC is also focused on a digital transformation programme to become 'the most digitally advanced tax administration in the world'.
